Information on checking your blood sugar
This series of three videos shares basic information regarding checking your blood sugar.
Checking Glucose: Monitoring glucose levels is crucial for managing diabetes, providing insights into treatment effectiveness and helping to establish healthy habits. Factors like strip storage, hand cleanliness, and blood sample location can impact meter accuracy. Individuals should consult their healthcare provider to determine appropriate glucose monitoring frequency and goals.
Troubleshooting Hyperglycemia: Hyperglycemia, or high blood glucose, can be caused by various factors including stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, lack of exercise, certain medications, and illness. Managing these factors, such as maintaining a healthy sleep schedule, eating balanced meals, and staying active, can help prevent hyperglycemia. It’s important to work with a healthcare team to manage diabetes and adjust medication as needed.
Troubleshooting Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycemia, or low blood glucose, occurs when levels drop below 70 mg/dL and can be caused by missed meals, certain medications, alcohol consumption, and physical activity. To treat hypoglycemia, the “Rule of 15” recommends consuming 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates, waiting 15 minutes, and rechecking blood glucose levels. If symptoms persist or worsen, administer glucagon or seek medical attention.
