Locating an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter can be a challenging task. One effective method to facilitate this process is by utilizing the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) website. While the search results may not guarantee that the selected interpreters will be the most suitable choice for your patient, it serves as a reliable means of verifying their certification.

To initiate the search, kindly click on the provided link or copy and paste the following into your browser: https://myaccount.rid.org/Public/Search/Member.aspx

Upon accessing the registry, follow these steps:

1. Select your state from the dropdown menu.

2. Under the Category section, choose ‘Certified’.

3. Ensure that the Freelance Status option is set to ‘Yes’.

4. Subsequently, navigate to the Certificates section and select the relevant certificate options, as indicated in red in the image below.

5. Click on ‘Find Member’ at the bottom of the page.

*Please note that certified deaf interpreters (CDIs) may also be available within your state. A CDI is a deaf or hard-of-hearing professional who has undergone certification by the RID. CDIs possess expertise in American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and are adept at interpreting situations where a hearing ASL interpreter may encounter difficulties in meeting the communication requirements of a deaf individual. These scenarios can encompass complex health information, emotionally charged situations, individuals who communicate using home signs or sign languages from other countries, and so on. They typically work in tandem with a hearing ASL interpreter.
