Information about insulin

This series of three videos shares basic information regarding insulin medication.

General Insulin Medication: Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels, and for individuals with diabetes, it can be injected or inhaled to manage their condition.  Different types of insulin, including long-acting and rapid-acting, are available, and it’s crucial to follow the prescribed dosage and injection schedule.  Proper storage, rotation of injection sites, and monitoring for side effects are essential for effective insulin therapy.

Basal Insulin Medication: Basal insulin, or background insulin, is a type of insulin that helps lower blood glucose levels, especially when the liver produces glucose. There are three types of basal insulin: ultra-long-acting, long-acting, and intermediate-acting, each with varying durations of action.  Type 1 diabetes typically requires both basal and bolus insulin, while type 2 diabetes may initially be managed with lifestyle changes but may progress to require basal insulin.

Bolus Insulin Medication: Bolus insulin, used in conjunction with basal insulin, is crucial for managing blood glucose levels, especially during meals and when levels are high. It can be administered before meals to prevent spikes and after meals to correct elevated levels. The type and dosage of bolus insulin depend on individual needs, meal size, and carbohydrate intake, with various methods like fixed doses, meal-based adjustments, and insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios available.
